Tools gig for artisans

The Coastal TVET College’s tool and die jig project is another National Skills Fund-funded initiative training future artisans in the tool development industry over five years.

These learners are trained in developing raw materials into fine products using different types of machines, such as lathes, milling machines, grinding machines, and jig grinders, in the workshop.

Kwenzekile Mkhize uMbumbulu, from the south of Durban, says she looks forward to completing the programme and passing the trade test to become a qualified artisan.

She aims to transfer the skills to young people in her rural area so that they can create products out of steel, such as mobiles, pressing tools, jigs, gauges, creative products, and any other material. These skills will help the youth to get employment.

Ntokozo Zikhali, from Cinci in Mtubatuba, is an NQF level 5, Phase 2, tool and die, jig learner.

He says that due to financial challenges, he did not complete his marine studies at Nelson Mandela University. However, he is grateful that he will complete this skills programme and have a recognised certificate that will open employment opportunities.

Ntokozo says that while the work is challenging and demanding, it is pleasing to see the progress from a drawing to a fine product.

These learners completed the first phase of the learning programme in January 2022 and were awarded their certificates. They have moved to the next development phase of the programme.

The NSF has continued to pledge its investment support for artisan development so that the country can produce at least 30 000 artisans annually by 2030.

The government’s National Development Plan remains the roadmap to achieve prosperity and alleviate socio-economic issues such as poverty, high rates of unemployment, and crime.
