How do you qualify?

The NSF's Qualifying Criteria

Only accredited skill development providers are eligible to implement learner-based NSF-funded projects. NSF recognises accreditation from the Quality Council of Trade and Occupations (QCTO), Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs), National Artisan Moderation Body (NAMB) and other sector bodies, such as the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA). Funding applicants are subjected to administrative compliance, technical evaluation and due diligence processes.

NSF has identified critical areas for funding support, targeting unemployed youth and vulnerable groups including, people with disabilities and people not in employment, education or training (NEET), particularly in rural areas. Other priorities include the funding of postgraduate studies in natural sciences at master, doctoral and post-doctoral levels; sports and wellness programmes; agriculture and rural development programmes; digital, information and communication technology skills programmes; community and faith based skills development programmes; as well as skills development for the promotion of co-operatives.

General requirements for NSF-funded education and training programmes:

In order to qualify proposals must demonstrate the following:

  • Support for implementation of Provincial government growth & development strategies and National priorities.
  • Relate to more distinct NSF Funding Windows plans.
  • Appropriate implementation experience and capacity.
  • Robust governance, monitoring and evaluation systems.
  • Consideration to meet NSDS, NSDP, ERRP, NDP targets
  • Where relevant, demonstrate support and endorsement by relevant stakeholders (National government departments, SETAs, QCTO, Stakeholder community, beneficiary community, etc).
  • The NSF may also use its own discretion in terms of other designated groups that may be proposed.
